I quite like how the story of this light bulb seems to reemerge every other year. It is a nice yearly reminder but also serves as a regular check in for how we might feel about innovation on any given day or following certain kinds of advances.
The very idea that this was made, installed, and turned on before humankind accomplished power flight is incredible. That it has remained past our first landing on a non-planetary body is quite literally awe-inspiring. At the moment I have nothing more to add, nothing more thoughtful to say, than “wow.”
A very touching, recently published story about the cross-cultural effects of technology on our conceptions of self.
A wonderful site called “Grandma Got STEM” profiles grandmothers who have accomplished marvellous feats of technology, and aims to drive a stake through the heart of stupid, thoughtless phrases like “How would you explain that to your grandmother?” or “So simple my grandma could do it.”
